This is Midnight. Midnight is a Reading Education Assistance Dog. He likes to have kids read books to him. Kids can sign up for times to read to Midnight by calling or stopping by the library. This is a great way to bulk up on reading skills before the school year starts. Midnight is super friendly and a fantastic listener. Time slots are still available at the Zumbrota Library on August 15th and 17th, or at the Pine Island Library Aug. 6, 13, 17, or 24. Call 507-732-5211 for more information.
We enjoyed a fun and informative visit from the Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo last week, but that’s not the end of the animal programs at the library this summer.
Tuesday, July 23, we’ll be hosting two programs by the Zumbro Watershed Partnership. At 10:30 am will be Zumbro Zoe’s Amazing Clean Water Show, where a 6-foot river otter will teach kids about the importance of clean water. At 1:00 pm will be a program called Amazing Animals of the Zumbro River, which will feature fun facts about bald eagles, herons, otters, beavers, gray foxes, kingfishers, and fish and will even include some sculls and furs that kids can touch and learn about. These programs are funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
Monday, July 29, at 6:30 pm and Tuesday, July 30, at 10:30 am we will be having our last story times for the summer, so we decided to celebrate by throwing a 50th Birthday Party for Clifford the Big Red Dog! Kids are invited to bring their own stuffed animals to this event. There will also be a special visitor: a real dog named Midnight who loves to have books read to him!
If you are a wildlife or dog lover you may want to make your way over to the library for one of these special events.
On Tuesday, July 9 from 6:30-8:00 pm we will be throwing a party in the library, and all area teens are invited to attend. Come just to hang out or come for the activities…there will be music, snacks, t-shirt dyeing, button making, and henna tattoos. This event is totally free and open to all 7th-12th graders.
Join us for a viewing of the newly released feature film The Great Gatsby at Paragon Theater in Rochester! The official start time for the movie is 2:25 pm this Saturday, May 18. Buses will load in the library parking lot at 1:00 pm. Tickets and transportation are free, but must be sign up for in advance at the library. Give us a call at 507-732-5211 if you have any questions.
The first ever Zumbrota Reads program has been off to a great start so far, after two engaging book discussions at the library. There is still much anticipation building, however, over the two film events coming up this week.
On Thursday at 6:30 pm at the State Theatre in Zumbrota there will be a screening of the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby staring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. The film will be preceded by a short lecture by noted Fitzgerald scholar, David Page. This event is free, no sign up necessary. Free popcorn will be provided at the event and your librarians will even make an appearance in costume.
On Saturday afternoon there will be a chartered bus in the library parking lot, ready to transport patrons to the movie theater in Rochester for a viewing of the newly released 2013 film version of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. The bus will start loading at 1:00 pm. There is a sign up sheet at the library for the bus and/or movie entrance. This event is also free of cost to those who sign up in advance.
It’s 1922 again and the party’s on us. Hope to see you there!
