Join us for a viewing of the newly released feature film The Great Gatsby at Paragon Theater in Rochester! The official start time for the movie is 2:25 pm this Saturday, May 18. Buses will load in the library parking lot at 1:00 pm. Tickets and transportation are free, but must be sign up for in advance at the library. Zumbrota goes to the movies

The first ever Zumbrota Reads program has been off to a great start so far, after two engaging book discussions at the library. There is still much anticipation building, however, over the two film events coming up this week.

On Thursday at 6:30 pm at the State Theatre in Zumbrota there will be a screening of the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby staring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. The film will be preceded by a short lecture by noted Fitzgerald scholar, David Page. This event is free, no sign up necessary. Free popcorn will be provided at the event and your librarians will even make an appearance in costume.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a chartered bus in the library parking lot, ready to transport patrons to the movie theater in Rochester for a viewing of the newly released 2013 film version of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. The bus will start loading at 1:00 pm. There is a sign up sheet at the library for the bus and/or movie entrance. This event is also free of cost to those who sign up in advance.

Book discussions this Saturday and Monday

This is a reminder that our book discussions of The Great Gatsby will be taking place this Saturday, May 11 at 1:30 pm and Monday, May 13 at 6:30 pm. We hope that you are able to make it to one of these discussion times. They will be more or less the same discussion so it is not necessary to attend both. Bring all of your questions, comments, and reactions to the book. We are looking forward to hearing your perspective.

Disc golf sets available for check out

Now that spring is slowly creeping in, residents of Zumbrota might consider stepping outside and trying out the new disc golf course at the Covered Bridge Park. The new course, which consists of a series of metal baskets designed for catching discs thrown from varying distances, was recently created and installed by Jim Perra and the Zumbrota Park Board. The #1 tee for the disc golf course can be found near the band shelter.

Sets of discs, along with handy carrying cases, are available for check out at the Zumbrota Public Library. The disc sets, which were donated to the library by Louis Banitt, each include one driver, one mid-range, and one putter. Disc golf is a leisurely, enjoyable game that does not require previous experience or skill. It can be played solo, with a group of friends, or as a family.

Take advantage of the sunny weather and check out some discs at the library today.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

April 15-May 18

Books will be available for FREE at the library, and at local businesses in town beginning April 15. A $5 donation is suggested, but not required.

Paws to Read at Pine Island Library

Beginning Saturday, March 9^th Van Horn Public Library in Pine Island will host four visits by Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) Midnight and his human companion Ann Goplen of Zumbrota. The mission of the R.E.A.D. program is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of registered therapy teams as literacy mentors. Readers must sign-up in advance at the Youth Library desk for the 20 minute sessions. Midnight will be available to listen from 10:00am to 11:30am. Further visits on March 23^rd, April 6^th and April 20^th from 10:00am to 11:30am may also be registered for at the Van Horn Public Library.

Minneapolis Guitar Quartet

The Minneapolis Guitar Quartet is coming to the Zumbrota Public Library on Saturday, February 23rd at 1 pm. They will be performing in our reading room, so you can enjoy a nice, relaxed atmosphere or browse for books while you listen to their music. Their repertoire ranges from Renaissance and Baroque to Spanish, Latin American and Romantic styles, and they have performed alongside several prominent symphonies and orchestras, as well as on NPR’s Performance Today. Soundboard Magazine has described the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet as “one of the major guitar ensembles in the world”. Come experience their sounds and stylings for yourself in the comfortable atmosphere of your favorite local library.
