Free Showing of "The Golden Age of Radio" - November 5
Step Back In Time To “The Golden Age Of Radio”
Performance will be free with general admission on day of event
Delight to the snazzy sounds of the days when radio was king and sing along with acclaimed vocalist Prudence Johnson and celebrated pianist Dan Chouinard. On Friday, Nov. 5 the Zumbrota Public Library will host a free performance of “The Golden Age of Radio” for area residents to enjoy. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. at the State Theatre, 88 E 4th St., Zumbrota. Johnson and Chouinard are frequent guests on National Public Radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”
“The Golden Age of Radio” is an entertaining, interactive performance of classic radio standards from the 1930s and ’40s brought to life with iconic photos and stories from the era. The program features such toe-tapping favorites as “A Tisket a Tasket” and “Accentuate The Positive.” Audience members are invited to sing along with Johnson and Chouinard on such classic as “Singin’ in the Rain” and the “Beer Barrel Polka.” Getting “gussied up” in period-appropriate or vintage-inspired attire is encouraged.
This show offers a fantastic opportunity for all generations to learn about the history of radio while enjoying an amazing performance by two extraordinary musicians.
Prudence Johnson’s career has taken her from honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall, from the theater stage to the Silver Screen, from the Midwest to the Middle East. With her roots in folk and country music, Prudence developed a passion for jazz and the work of the 20th century’s great songwriters, and found the perfect collaborator in pianist Dan Chouinard.
Chouinard is a Minneapolis native who plays, tours and records regularly with an ever-expanding roster of musicians and writers. He created the acclaimed radio series “The Singer’s Voice,” which is broadcast live every Sunday night from the Dakota Jazz Club.
“The Golden Age of Radio” performance is funded with money from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. For more information, call the Zumbrota Public Library at 507-732-5211.

In total, the library received $6,603.76 in monetary donations and contributions. This amount was three times the amount we received in 2007, thanks to Mr. Friese's donation as well as grant money from the Zumbrota Community Trust. The library also receives smaller amounts on a regular basis, and the library would like to recognize all those who donated money in 2008.

New Unattended Children Policy
[Archived - March 5, 2009]
The Zumbrota Public Library Board of Trustees recently voted to enact a new policy for unattended children in the library. The full text of the new policy is as follows:
A responsible adult or caregiver must accompany any child under the age of 10 years old while he/she is using the Library, for the child’s safety and comfort. A caregiver is defined as any individual 16 years of age or older who has the authority and responsibility to care for a child by the child’s parent or legal guardian. The Library does not act in loco parentis (in place of parents) and Library staff does not have the authority to take responsibility for unattended children. A child must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or caregiver at all times inside the building. If an unattended child calls attention to him/herself, Library staff will attempt to locate the parent/caregiver in the library and inform him/her of the policy. If the parent/caregiver is not present in the building or cannot be reached by telephone, the local Police Department may be asked to intervene. Parents, legal guardians, caregivers, and children who are in violation of this policy are subject to suspension of library privileges.
