October Events

This October the library will be a busy book lover’s haven of activity, starting Saturday, October 4 with a visit from Minnesota Book Awards Finalist Rachael Hanel at 1:30pm.  Hanel will be speaking about her memoir We’ll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down.

The big news for lovers of Rick Riordan books is the upcoming October 7 release of his latest book, The Blood of Olympus.  To celebrate the library will offer ongoing challenges, trivia, treasure hunts, and prize drawings the entire week of October 6-11.  Stop by any day (or every day!) that week to participate in the book promotion activities, add your name to the reserve list, or enter to win your own copy of The Blood of Olympus.

The young adult event this October will be a Fright Film Fest on Friday, October 24, 7:00-9:30pm.  7th-12th graders are invited to submit their homemade horror videos to be viewed and voted on at the event.  The Fright Film Fest will also feature a zombie makeup station, a toy “zombification” station, and plenty of spooky snacks.  Video submissions are due to the library by 8pm on Monday, October 20.  All videos must be a maximum of 10 minutes long and appropriate for a 12-year-old and up audience.

This year’s Kids Halloween Party at the library will be Monday, October 27 at 6:30pm.  Kids are encouraged to come in costume and bring the whole family.  Other kids events in October include Super Saturday Story Time on Saturday, October 11 at 10:00am with special visitors, the Zumbrota Fire Department.  LEGO club will meet on Thursday, October 16 at 6:30pm and will be making LEGO creations to display in the library’s display case.

This fall will see a bit of the new and a bit of the familiar with children’s programs at the library.  The exciting new feature is Super Saturdays- story times, special visitors, and fun activities on the second Saturday of every month.  The first Super Saturday will be October 11 at 10am, and the special visitors will be the Zumbrota Fire Department.  The firefighters are looking forward to bringing their truck, reading some stories, and sharing some fire prevention tips.  On November 8 at 10am, the Super Saturday special visitors will be Quarry Hill Nature Center.  They will teach all about Creepy Crawly Bugs, and even bring along a few live critters to look at and learn from.

LEGO club is still going strong at the library on the third Thursday of every month.  A recent donation has doubled the size of the library’s LEGO collection, expanding the building possibilities.  Upcoming dates for LEGO club are September 18, October 16, November 20, and December 18, all at 6:30pm.

Weekly story time continues on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am.  Story times at the library focus on building early literacy skills for 0-5 year olds through favorite books, songs, rhymes, and activities.

Author Visit & Memoir Writing Workshop

We are pleased to announce that author Rachael Hanel will be visiting us at 1:30pm on Saturday, October 4.  Hanel will speak about her latest book, We’ll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down: Memoir of a Gravedigger’s Daughter, as well as provide some memoir writing tips.

We’ll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down (a 2014 Minnesota Book Award finalist) presents the unique, moving perspective of a gravedigger’s daughter and her lifelong relationship with death. It is also a masterful meditation on the living elements of our cemeteries: our neighbors, friends, and families and how these things come together in the eyes of a young girl whose childhood is suffused with death and the wonder of the living.

Rachael Hanel is a fiscal year 2014 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
